The Canada Greener Homes Loan (CGHL) program will be extended with an additional $600 million in funding. This extension responds to strong demand and will continue to support Canadian homeowners in making energy-efficient home upgrades.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan (CGHL)

Loan Details:

Maximum: $40,000
Minimum: $5,000
Repayment term: 10 years, interest-free
Loan type: Unsecured personal loan on approved credit

A maximum of one loan is available per eligible property and homeowner.

The maximum eligible loan amount is calculated based on the retrofits selected in the application and the quotes for this work. The eligible amount is capped based on industry standards and market norms. The maximum eligible loan amount may be less than your quoted cost, in which case you will be responsible for funding any difference.

Once approved, a portion of the loan can be delivered up front to assist in paying any deposits required by your contractor. The balance of the loan will be delivered after the retrofits have been completed and verified through a post-retrofit evaluation.

No cost retrofits for your home

(will become available the first half of 2025)

The new Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP) will start to be delivered in the first half of 2025 through our partners in provinces and territories. When in place, CGHAP-funded programs will provide low-to-median-income homeowners and tenants with no cost home retrofits, such as insulation and heat pumps, to help reduce monthly energy bills, while reducing energy use and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program (CGHAP)

Households seeking to apply for CGHAP-funded retrofits will need to submit applications to the relevant program in their province or territory. Links to these programs will be provided here as they become available (expected by mid-2025). The Government of Canada is not accepting applications from households to participate in the program nor from other organizations interested in being part of program delivery. The latter should reach out to the energy efficiency entity in their provincial or territorial government for more information.

By working together, governments can offer effective and regionally tailored programs that improve home energy efficiency, both comfortably and CGHAP will use a direct install approach, meaning that the program delivery organization will handle all the logistics associated with planning and paying for home retrofits on behalf of the participating households.

This approach is meant to make it easier for low-to-median-income households to retrofit their homes at no cost. That means that participants will not be asked to pay out of pocket to participate nor will they need to schedule a series of contractors to undertake major retrofit projects.
